Mothers Day History & Origin

Origin of Mothers day traced back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the actual roots of Mothers Day History can also be found in the UK where the Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festivity observed in the United States of America. However, the celebration of Mothers Day as it is seen in nowadays is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old.

Earlier, the Greek people were highly dedicated to their maternal goddesses on the special eve of the annual spring festival.  And hence as per the Greek mythology, they have celebrated this event in order to honor Rhea who known as the mother of many deities. The ancient Roman people were also celebrating the festival of spring with named Hilaria that devoted to the Cybele, a mother of the goddess. The whole celebration of this festive season was organized for three days along with lots of activities like the variety of parades, games, and masquerades.

Mother’s day also celebrated by Christians on fourth Sunday to convey their respect to Virgin Mary. On that day, Christians worship mother of Christ and offered some gifts, flowers and pay tribute to her.  Another history of Mothers Day celebration is in the US, where Anna Jarvis was known as the founder of Mothers Day, who was inspired by her mother’s love after death and decided to celebrate the day for mothers and symbolized their true love.

The idea of official celebration of Mothers Day in the USA was first suggested by Julia Ward Howe in the year 1872. She suggested that 2nd Sunday of June be commemorated as Mothers Day and should be dedicated to peace. Her idea was spread but, it was later replaced the Mothers Day holiday which is now celebrated in May
